1330-Acre Desert Control by Solartech Solar Pumping System

In every spring, the North China Plain is suffering from sandstorms came from Mongolia and the north desert. The sandstorms would cause harm to people’s living and production, health, transportation safety and ecology system. People have been always fighting against desert and searching for scientific, efficient and harmonious solution for desert control. Whereas, solar pumping system adapts to different conditions, taking full advantages of solar energy and transfer it into electric energy, driving the pump to draw groundwater to apply water saving irrigation, has become the optimal solution for desert control.
 
Solartech solar pumping system can implement full automatic operation without power grid, it has the benefits of low cost, high reliability, energy saving and environmental protection. Meanwhile, the solar pumping system can be integrated with water-saving and fertilizer-saving irrigation technologies, intending to replace the traditional flooding irrigation. According to different growing phases of vegetables, micro irrigation, filter irrigation and drip irrigation can be applied to provide irrigation as well as fertilizer to the vegetables.
 
Mu Us Dersert is located in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Desert Control Demonstration Base of Labor Hero Niu Yuqin lies in the southern part of Maowusu desert in Jingbian county, Shaanxi Province. The demonstration base covers over 18,000 acres, With her strong belief and insistent spirit, Niu Yuqin has led local people fighting against the desert for more than 30 years. Over 20 millions of trees were planted in Mu Us desert, more than 18,000 acres of desert had become to oasis, the edge of desert was forced to retreat longer than 10km. Her achievements set a good foundation for the developments of agriculture and animal husbandry in surrounding areas.
 
Niu Yuqin started to use Solartech solar pumping solutions and equipment for forestry irrigation in her Desert Control Base from 2009. The first 3kw solar pumping system was designed to lift water 85m3 daily at 30m water head, combined with technologies of water saving and integration of water and fertilizer, the system could irrigate 17.3 acres of watermelon. However, the observation data showed that the average of actual water flow reached to 98m3/day with max flow 110m3/day. Beside irrigating the watermelon field, the system can also irrigate 5.8 acres of 4 year old pinus sylvestris and 3.5 acres of 1 year old pinus sylvestris by mirco irrigation and drip irrigation, and tree survival rate had jumped to above 92%. On the contrary, for the place using flooding irrigation by conventional pumps, the survival rate of 1 year old pinus sylvestris was only 62%, but the water consumption was more than triple, the fertilizer requirement was more than double. Compared to previous years, the solar pump system can save the electricity cost and and related expense more than 800USD monthly. Through 3 years of continuous operation, the solar pumping system attained desirable economic benefits and practical impacts.
 
In 2011, Niu Yuqin Desert Control Demonstration Base opened up 300-acre sand to grow cash crops. With the water supplied by the new introduced Solartech PS7500 solar pumping systems, she started to grow season vegetables like pepper, tomato and beans in the greenhouse, she also initiated a large scale economic tree planting project. The system design was to provide water 180m3/day at 30m water head according to the average solar radiation in past years, which was sufficient to meet the water requirement of 300-acre land. The observation data showed that the average of actual water flow reached to 220m3/day with max flow 240m3/day. Besides irrigating the 300-acre land, the system was also used to supply water for 33 acres of clover and corn to feed the sheep, and the sheep manure can be applied to produce methane and fertilizer. In this way, the "Agriculture, Cultivation, Forestry" Green Cyclical Economy has formed, which set a new developing mode of desert control.
 
China has more than 2.6 million square kilometers of desertification area and more 1.7 million square kilometers of sand area. The famous Chinese scientist Qian Xuesen raised the concept of "Deserticulture" in 1984. Throughout implementation of 4 years in Niu Yuqin Desert Control Demonstration Base, the solar pumping system has been proved suitable for deserts. The system can increase the survival rate of pasture and trees, it also improves the efficiency of desert control, reduces the cost and reconstruction on desert control. At the same time, on the deserts where conditions permit, vegetables, fruits, pasture, herbs can be grown to develop the planting industry. Hence in the desert control system, planting is supporting the animal husbandry, and animal husbandry is supporting the forestry. When human comes, the desert leaves, a Green Cyclical Economy can be achieved by this way. Solartech solar pumping system can easily combine with different water saving irrigation systems, replace the traditional flooding irrigation which will waste  tremendous water, electricity, fertilizer. According to different growing phases of vegetations, micro irrigation, filter irrigation, drip irrigation can be applied to increases benefit and production. Moreover, the system responds to national industry policies of greenhouse gas emission reduction and green, low carbon circular economy development. Solar pumping technology is the key to solve problems of desert control, ecology recovery, and deserticulture.
