Beijing, November 17, according to Voice of China ‘News and newspapers Summary’ reported, China will export cheap and high quality farmland irrigation techniques and equipments to the world, to alleviate the problem of food security.

 

The new elected president of ICID(International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage) Zhanyi Gao professor told the reporter, at present, the number of hungry people is still increasing, it is internationally accepted that the key to solve food security problem is to develop irrigation techniques in order to improve production.

 

Zhanyi Gao said: The Millennium Development Goals aimed to reduce 825 millions of people who suffer from hunger to half by 2015, but the number raised up to 925 millions by the end of 2010. On the planet, only 18% of total farmland areas are irrigated areas, but 40% of the world’s food production are produced there. How to improve food production? The irrigation coverage must be increased.

 

The prices of irrigation and drainage techniques and equipments are still too high, which many poor countries could not afford. Zhanyi Gao indicated that the irrigation and drainage techniques researched and developed inChinaare low price and high practical, the techniques can be exported to foreign countries in the next steps.

 

Zhanyi Gao said: We brought drop irrigation technique into China, pulled the prices down by further research and development, made it affordable and practical.China is preparing to support 6 representatives from poor countries inAfrica, and give them training and help in the technical field as best as we can.
